The National Motorsports Appeals Panel upheld the P3 penalty Wednesday to Obaika Racing’s No. 97 Xfinity Series team for an incident at Dover International Raceway.
The team was penalized after the No. 97, driven by Peyton Sellers, dropped a weight on the track during a practice session, which then hit the car driven by Carl Long, damaging it and causing Long to crash.
The team was penalized with a $15,000 fine to the crew chief, John Monsam; a one-race suspension for Monsam and the car chief; probation for both Monsam and the car chief through Dec. 31 and and the loss of 15 championship driver and 15 championship owner points.
The team was only appealing the points deduction.
The incident violated the following in the NASCAR rule book
12.1 – Actions detrimental to stock car racing;
126.96.36.199b – Any and all ballast added to the vehicle must be bolted inside an added ballast container inside the main frame rails, and/or inside the front sway bar mounting tube.
Improperly attached weight; weight fell out of car.
The team has the right to appeal the decision of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel to the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer in accordance with Section 15 of the NASCAR rule book.
