Just over a year following a near-fatal battle with sepsis, renowned NASCAR artist Sam Bass is recovering from surgery to stem another serious blood infection.

NASCAR’s first officially licensed artist, Bass, whose studio is located across the street from Charlotte Motor Speedway, has fought Type 1 diabetes throughout his life.

Last year, issues with his diabetes led to Bass being hospitalized twice, including 10 weeks of treatment for sepsis, a blood disease that “often results in loss of limbs or even death,” according to a media release put out by Bass’s publicist.

In his most recent episode, Bass noticed the warning signs, sought medical treatment and shortly thereafter underwent surgery last Wednesday to correct the issue. He expects to be released sometime in the coming days.

“I tremendously appreciate the prayers and continued support of everyone during this extremely difficult time,” Bass said in a statement.
