Martin Truex Jr.’s victory Sunday at Pocono Raceway proved to be a popular one in the sport.
The challenges Truex has faced since he last won – in June 2013 at Sonoma – included losing his ride at Michael Waltrip Racing after the sponsor left in response to the organization being penalized for its actions at the Richmond fall race and his longtime girlfriend, Sherry Pollex, being diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year.
“I think when you look at everything personally that Martin and Sherry have dealt with, I’m just super, super happy for them personally,” runner-up Kevin Harvick said. “I’m super happy for (owner Barney Visser) and his team, but more importantly for Martin and Sherry, to see them have that bright spot of today is something that I think the whole garage is going to support and be happy with.”
A few drivers congratulated Truex in Victory Lane after the race but many in the sport took to social media to offer their congratulations.
