Trevor Bayne tunes up for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Pocono by winning first career ARCA race

TREVOR BAYNE 2015

Ironically, even though he has made 71 career starts in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, Trevor Bayne has never raced at Pocono Raceway until this weekend.

So, with some extra time on his hands since the Sprint Cup regulars ended their on track activities Saturday before 1 pm ET -- and to get some extra track time as a tune-up for Sunday’s Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400 Sprint Cup race -- Bayne decided to take up Cunningham Motorsports on the opportunity to run in the Pocono ARCA 200.

It couldn’t have worked out better for the 2011 Daytona 500 winner, who earlier this week announced he and wife Ashton were expecting their first child in December.

Bayne earned the pole and then dominated, leading 42 laps of the 80-lap event, including the final 11 laps, to win in both his ARCA Series and Pocono debuts.

Bayne certainly could use a boost like Saturday’s win, having had a difficult go of it in his first full-time Sprint Cup season in 2015.

Bayne enters Sunday’s Cup race 31st in the standings, with his best finish thus far this season being back-to-back 18th-place finishes at Martinsville and Texas.

He’ll start Sunday’s race in 33rd position.
