Because of scheduling conflicts, John Wes Townley will step out of his Xfinity Series car for the next two races to focus on his Camping World Truck Series schedule.
Athenian Motorsports announced Thursday that Sprint Cup regular Alex Bowman will drive the No. 25 Zaxby’s Chevrolet in the Xfinity Series race June 13 at Michigan International Speedway.
Townley is competing that night in the truck race at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.
“I’m really excited about working with the guys at Athenian,” Bowman said in a media release. “And Michigan is one of my favorite places to race. I think we can run up front and, hopefully, contend for a win.”
Bowman drives full time in the Sprint Cup Series for Tommy Baldwin Racing.
In the June 20 race at Chicagoland Speedway, Dylan Lupton -- which had previously been planned -- will replace Townley in the No. 25. Townley will race a truck at Iowa Speedway that weekend.
Townley has competed full time in both the Xfinity and truck series, the latter being his designated series to earn points. He is ranked fifth in the truck standings through six races, 71 points behind series leader Matt Crafton, with a season-best sixth at Charlotte last month. He also has competed in 10 of the first 12 Xfinity Series races, with a best of 13th last month at Iowa.
Townley will be back in the No. 25 Zaxby’s Chevy in the Xfinity Series race July 4 at Daytona International Speedway.
