For the second straight week, a championship-contending Sprint Cup team has been slapped with a P1 penalty for receiving consecutive written warnings.

Kevin Harvick’s No. 4 Chevrolet team was hit with punishment after receiving written warnings before the Sprint Cup races at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Dover International Speedway. Harvick’s team had to go through prerace inspection more than three times at Charlotte, and the Chevy’s exhaust pipe didn’t conform to rulebook specifications at Dover.

The punishment is that the team will receive the last choice of pit stalls for Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway. Harvick’s team does have the option to appeal. After receiving a P1 penalty last week for consecutive written warnings, Jimmie Johnson’s team appealed and will have its case heard June 9.

NASCAR’s rule book states that if a team receives two warnings during two consecutive events, they may receive one or more P1 penalties at NASCAR’s discretion. Having last choice of pit stalls is among those P1 penalties.

NASCAR sent a memo to teams last month about penalties for needing multiple attempts to get through inspection.

Trevor Bayne also was fined $20,000 and placed on NASCAR probation through Dec. 31 for walking across the race surface before being attended to after a crash involving his No. 6 Ford in the May 31 race at Dover.
