NASCAR fined crew chief Gary Cogswell $15,000 and placed him on probation through Dec. 31 for a P3 penalty when ballast from Ross Chastain’s car fell off during Xfinity practice last weekend at Iowa Speedway. NASCAR also placed car chief Charles Kent on probation through Dec. 31.
The weight struck Jamie Dick’s car, hitting it in the hood and then impacting the windshield and striking his helmet as he trailed Chastain on the track.
Dick was uninjured but had to go to a backup car.
NASCAR cited the JD Motorsports team for:
12.1: Actions detrimental to stock car racing
20.17.2.1: Overall vehicle weight
- Any and all ballast added to the vehicle must be bolted inside an added ballast container, inside the main frame rails, and/or inside the front sway bar mounting tube. Weight affixed improperly.
Afterward the incident last weekend, Chastain tweeted: “On behalf of myself and everybody at JD Motorsports, I want to apologize to Jamie and everyone at Viva Motorsports. Words don’t mean much now but I’ll do everything I can to make this right and changes will be made on our end. Right now I’m just glad my friend is alright.”
