Landon Cassill plans 14-mile cool down lap after Coke 600

It’s typical for drivers to have a cool down lap or two after finishing a race like the Coca-Cola 600, the longest and most grueling event on the Sprint Cup schedule.

But NASCAR driver Landon Cassill -- who is running full-time in both the Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series this season -- is going to take a rather lengthy and unusual cool down lap after this Sunday’s 600, one that will last 14 miles.

On foot, no less.

If everything goes right for Cassill in the race, he’ll climb out of his race car after crossing the finish line, switch into his running shoes and will then run 14 miles from Charlotte Motor Speedway to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Cassill, a regular participant in triathlons, is running what amounts to be just a bit over a half-marathon after the 600 as a promotion for Snap Fitness, which will serve as primary sponsor on his No. 40 Chevrolet SS in Sunday’s race.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to combine my passion for running with encouraging others to embrace a healthy lifestyle while recognizing those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our country,” Cassill said in a media release. “My goal with this post-race run is to motivate the sport’s fan base to get up and make fitness a priority this summer.”
