NASCAR tells teams of new safety requirements for pit crew members

NASCAR has sent an email to teams stating that effective June 4, all pit crew members will be required to wear fire retardant gloves, underwear and head socks. Previously, only those refueling the car were required to wear such equipment. Such equipment was recommended for other pit crew members.

The Charlotte Observer first reported this story. NASCAR confirmed to NASCAR Talk the email and what it stated.

The move comes after three crew member were injured in a pit fire during the Xfinity race last month at Richmond International Raceway. There also was a brief pit fire during the Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway earlier this month. Both involved Richard Childress Racing teams, which recently stated it was requiring all its pit crew members to wear head socks. Two pit crew members from Brendan Gaughan’s RCR team were hospitalized after the Richmond fire.
