FORT WORTH – On his 35th birthday, Kasey Kahne received a bit of a surprise at Texas Motor Speedway.
After his first run during the second Sprint Cup practice session Friday, the Hendrick driver was minding his own business while sitting in his No. 5 Chevy.
When he turned to look out the driver’s window he was met with the face of Kelly Kahne.
Kelly had flown into Fort Worth from the family’s home in Washington state. It was the first time Kasey has seen his father at the track in three months.
“I was really surprised,” Kahne said after qualifying fourth for Saturday’s Duck Commander 500. “He got a new knee about 3 months ago, so he really hasn’t done much. He hasn’t gone to any sprint car races with my brother, not any Cup races and this is usually his third Cup race by now.
“I’m glad he’s here. That was a cool surprise for my birthday. And for him to be in Texas, this is a track that he enjoys watching also.”
