Kyle Larson was taken to a local area hospital after fainting during an autograph session with fans Saturday afternoon at Martinsville Speedway, a Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates spokesman confirmed. Larson was awake and alert on the way to the hospital, according to the team.

Larson was doing an appearance at the Martinsville, Va., track when he lost consciousness. The Charlotte Observer reported he was taken to the track’s infield care center, whose doctors recommended a trip to the hospital for further evaluation.

According to a report by FoxSports.com, the team was continuing to prepare for Sunday’s STP 500 Sprint Cup race, which Larson is slated to start from seventh. Fox Sports’ Alan Cavanna initially reported the news on Larson.

The 20014 Sprint Cup rookie of the year is ranked 18th in the Sprint Cup points standings entering Sunday’s race.
