Kyle Busch has been released from a Charlotte, N.C., hospital and is home, wife Samantha tweeted, and a Joe Gibbs Racing spokesperson confirmed Friday morning.
Busch spent three nights in a Daytona Beach, Fla., hospital after he suffered a compound fracture of his lower right leg and a fractured left foot in last weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity race at Daytona International Speedway. Busch slammed into an inside wall not protected by a SAFER barrier.
He was transferred to North Carolina on Tuesday. He had surgery on his right leg last Saturday and surgery on his left foot Wednesday.
Joie Chitwood, president of Daytona International Speedway, announced a few hours after Busch’s crash that the speedway “is going to install SAFER barrier on every inch at this property. This is not going to happen again.’’
SAFER barriers, a combination of steel and foam, absorb the energy in an accident to lessen the chance of driver injury.
Matt Crafton drove Busch’s car to an 18th-place finish in Sunday’s Daytona 500. David Ragan will drive Busch’s No. 18 Toyota Sprint Cup car for the “next several weeks,” beginning this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Erik Jones is driving Busch’s Xfinity car this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
