Kyle Busch was released from a Daytona Beach, Fla., hospital Tuesday morning and flown to Charlotte, N.C., where he has been transferred to a local hospital, a Joe Gibbs Racing spokesperson confirmed.
Busch spent three nights at Halifax Health Medical Center after suffering a compound fracture of his lower right leg and a fracture of his left foot Saturday. He was injured when his car careened head-first into a concrete wall inside Turn 1 at Daytona International Speedway. Busch had surgery on his right leg that night.
Joie Chitwood, president of Daytona International Speedway, announced a few hours after Busch’s crash that the speedway “is going to install SAFER barrier on every inch at this property. This is not going to happen again.’’
SAFER barriers, a combination of steel and foam, absorb the energy in an accident to lessen the chance of driver injury.
Matt Crafton drove Busch’s car to an 18th-place finish in Sunday’s Daytona 500. Joe Gibbs Racing has not announced who will drive Busch’s car this week at Atlanta Motor Speedway. JGR also has not stated how long Busch will be out.
