Jeff Gordon paces first of two Friday Sprint Cup practices

Jeff Gordon continued to have a great Speedweeks, pacing the field in the first of two Sprint Cup practice sessions on Friday morning.

Gordon, who earned the pole position for the Daytona 500 during last Sunday’s qualifying with a speed of 201.293 mph, was significantly slower in Friday’s practice session at 193.079 mph.

However, weather conditions were different Friday as compared to last Sunday. And those conditions were also likely why just 14 cars took to the track in Friday’s first practice session.

Michael Waltrip, who will replace Brian Vickers in Sunday’s Daytona 500, was second-fastest in the practice session, followed by Martin Truex Jr., and Penske racing teammates Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano.

The second Sprint Cup practice session is slated to go later Friday afternoon from 2 to 3:25 pm ET.

The final practice session in preparation for Sunday’s Daytona 500 will take place Saturday from 10:30 to 11:55 am ET.
