Crash involving Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch red flags Sprint Unlimited again with 6 laps left

A four-car incident on the backstretch briefly put the Sprint Unlimited under a red flag with six laps to go.

Tony Stewart moved up and made contact with Kyle Busch off of Turn 2, which sent Stewart spinning into Greg Biffle and Jeff Gordon. Gordon managed to escape, but Biffle was sent skidding hard into the inside wall.

But that was not the end of it. Kurt Busch was also hit by the wayward Stewart and was then unable to avoid Biffle, who took a second impact.

Biffle’s Roush Fenway Racing team later tweeted that he was OK.

Stewart later said that he was trying to get back in line, and just wasn’t clear of Kyle Busch.

“It is kind of what we all have to do,” Stewart said. “You have to push, especially this close to the end. You have to fight to get into a spot there. I either wasn’t all the way clear, or didn’t get there quick enough. It just part of it.

“You have got to do what everybody else is doing. You have to do the same thing. I have to do what everybody else is doing.”

Said Kurt Busch: “I was running about 10th, and I had a choice to make to go left or to go right. I went left and then everybody else ended up left.”

This was the last in a series of incidents that marred NASCAR’s season-opening exhibition event this evening.

Brad Keselowski was taken out in a crash during the first, 25-lap segment, and early in the second segment, a 12-car melee was triggered by contact between Greg Biffle and Jamie McMurray.

The wrecks cut the field down to 12 cars by the time they took the green flag again with four laps to go.
