As part of an executive realignment at Speedway Motorsports Inc., Marcus Smith has been elevated to chief executive officer of the company, while his father, Bruton Smith, is now its executive chairman.

The changes, approved today by SMI’s Board of Directors, are effective immediately.

Marcus has been SMI’s president and chief operating officer since 2008. He will retain the roles and titles of SMI president and president/general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Marcus will work closely with Bruton to manage SMI’s day-to-day operations, as well as provide leadership and communicate with company shareholders.

Bruton, who turns 88 years old in March and has been chairman and CEO of SMI since its incorporation in 1994, will report to the Board of Directors in his new role.

In addition to Charlotte, SMI owns seven other U.S. tracks including: Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Sonoma Raceway, and Texas Motor Speedway.

All eight SMI tracks host NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events. Two (Sonoma and Texas) host additional Verizon IndyCar Series events.
