Johanna Long’s NASCAR comeback is further delayed

Johanna Long’s hiatus from NASCAR racing will continue a little longer.

After sitting out the entire 2014 season, Long announced two weeks ago that she’d race in an unspecified amount of races in both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and Camping World Truck Series in 2015 for Mike Affarano Motorsports.

The new team, based in Salisbury, N.C., had hoped to kick things off by competing in the Xfinity Series season-opening Alert Today Florida 300 on Feb. 21.

That hope has now been placed on hold.

“The car we planned to run did not have the necessary updates that are required to pass the NASCAR certification process,” Long told ESPNW.com on Wednesday.

When the 22-year-old Pensacola, Fla., racer will be back on the racetrack remains uncertain.

“It’s hard to put a time frame on it,” Long told ESPNW. “We’re just trying to get as prepared as possible for when we do make our debut. I am disappointed, but I remain hungry as ever. And good things take time, right?”

Long raced part-time in the Nationwide Series (now Xfinity Series) in 2012 and 2013. Her best finish was 12th, three times, at Daytona and Kentucky in 2012 and at Iowa in 2013.

However, her team, owned by Mary Louise Miller, folded after the 2013 season.

Long also has 24 career starts in the Truck Series, with a best showing of 11th at Texas in 2011.
