Dale Earnhardt Jr. recalls his first NASCAR win in 2000 and what his father, Dale Sr., told him afterward.

It’s been 18 long years since Dale Earnhardt Jr. won his first Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway on April 2, 2000.

This week marks the anniversary of that race and Earnhardt shared his memories of that day in Fort Worth, Texas, on NASCAR America.

Earnhardt proved that racers can remember the strangest things.

“I remember that car being amazing,” Earnhardt said. “We had some springs in the front end I had never heard of us running before. So we had 1,800 (pounds) in the right front and 400 in the left front, to me that was completely different to anything we’d ever done before.

“We were a new team in the Cup series. The Eurys, Tony Sr. and Tony Jr., were confident we were going to blow up the Cup Series. I myself was a little more apprehensive.”

The victory, in Earnhardt’s first full-time year in Cup, came in his 12th career start.

Earnhardt also talked about his brief celebration with his father in Victory Lane.
