Martinsville pit stall picks

Given the tight confines at Martinsville Speedway, the decision of when to pit could have a major impact on deciding the race winner.

MARTINSVILLE, Virginia - Playoff contenders Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott will pit next to each other in today’s Cup race at Martinsville Speedway.

Playoff teams typically do not pit next to each other, but Blaney had the last selection and the only spot remaining was behind Elliott’s stall.

Pit stall selections were based on qualifying results last weekend at Kansas Speedway because qualifying at Martinsville takes place shortly before today’s race. Blaney’s team failed inspection after qualifying at Kansas and lost pit stall pick there and Martinsville, along with losing his qualifying spot at Kansas.

Pit stall picks are important because Martinsville’s pit road is narrow and there are few openings before or after a stall.

Martin Truex Jr., who won the pole last week at Kansas, is in the No. 1 stall near pit exit.

“Pit road will play a factor in this race,’' analyst Jeff Burton said on NASCAR America this week.
