NASCAR America: You can’t let up for even a second at Darlington

cDRDiGveiTS4
Only the best NASCAR drivers prevail at Darlington making it arguably the toughest race of the year.

Darlington Raceway isn’t called the “Track Too Tough To Tame” for nothing.

Virtually everything about the 1.366-mile, egg-shaped oval is hard, including the hardest walls in NASCAR, the hardest way to navigate around it, the hardest race for crew chiefs to set up a car for, and of course the hardest track for drivers to win at.

Perhaps that’s why there have been 11 different winners in the last 11 races there. Will it be 12 in 12 after Sunday’s annual Bojangles’ Southern 500?

It’s also no wonder that when drivers finally complete their 500 laps around the track, they are thoroughly exhausted, sometimes even requiring IVs to replenish fluids lost while driving in the race.

On NASCAR America, our crew and guests talked about why drivers cannot let their guard down or lose their concentration for even a second, lest they find themselves in trouble real quick -- and potentially into Darlington’s hard as diamonds walls, which are still hard even with SAFER barriers in place.

Check out the video above to find out what makes Darlington so tough -- and hasn’t changed that way since NASCAR’s first race there in 1950.

And if you eventually learn how to charm the Lady In Black and find success there, that’s where legends are made, according to another segment from Wednesday’s show.
