Darrell Wallace Jr.: ‘Unreal’ to finish sixth in five straight Xfinity races

After his fifth consecutive sixth place finish, Darrell Wallace Jr. discusses his experience and comeback at Texas Motor Speedway.

Under any other circumstances, a sixth-place finish would be anything other than “unreal.”

But that’s how Darrell Wallace Jr. described it after the My Bariatric Soutions 300 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Wallace, who drives the No. 6 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing, finished sixth for the fifth race in a row. It’s the second-longest streak in series history of finishing in the same top 10 spot.

It trails only Jack Ingram’s six-race stretch of finishing second in 1983.

“I really fought hard there and did look with about nine laps to go where I was and got it mixed up between us and (William Byron), and we were sixth,” Wallace said. “Shout out to my guys. My pit crew was on it all day and all year. They put us in the game there on the green-flag stop. I saw we came out a couple spots ahead of the guys we were behind and I knew it would be a good day.”

Wallace has overcome having the flu at Las Vegas and being involved in a five-car accident on Lap 66 Saturday to string together the bizarre chain of top-10 finishes.

“We had some good calls and good strategy today,” Wallace said. "(Tyler Reddick) got into us there in entry (of Turn 3). Just a racing deal. I was a little pissed off at first, but you have to remember there are rookies out here, and I am still learning myself.”

In his first two Xfinity seasons, Wallace never earned more than two top 10s through the first six races of a season.

When Wallace finished sixth at Auto Club Speedway, he was the first Xfinity driver to place in the same top 10 spot in four consecutive races since Kevin Harvick in 2005. That year, Harvick finished second in the first four races.
