Kyle Busch may not miss qualifying after all

Kyle Busch was able to regain control after a slight spin caused damage to the rear of his car.

UPDATE: After taking a closer look at the damage, Kyle Busch’s team is hopeful it can make the repairs in time for qualifying so Busch won’t have to start at the rear.

Kyle Busch will start at the rear for Sunday’s Cup race because the team will not make an attempt in Friday’s qualifying session. Instead, the team will spend the extra time repairing the car. Busch hit the wall with about 43 minutes left in Friday’s practice session at Texas Motor Speedway.

Busch got above the groove and into part of the track that had not been cleaned off by competitors running entering Turn 1. His car wiggled in the turn and slid up the track, backing into the SAFER barrier.

“I just missed the entry point of getting into (Turn) one,’' Busch told Fox Sports 1. “My right rear was just kind of hung over the black edge in the dirt. As soon as I turned off, it was gone. I was chasing it from entry. It was a really fast car.’'

The Joe Gibbs Racing team was given approval to go to a backup car by NASCAR but elected to repair it because of how fast the car was.
