NASCAR America: Why appealing Brad Keselowski’s crew chief penalty proved crucial

Brad Keselowski has said Martinsville is one of the most crucial races on the schedule and that could have played into when and why Penske chose to appeal penalty.

Brad Keselowski has said numerous times that Martinsville Speedway is one of the more crucial races on the schedule for him.

Not only is it a demanding short track, Keselowski had never won at the .526-mile paper-clip shaped facility prior to Sunday’s triumph in the STP 500.

That’s why it was so important to have crew chief Paul Wolfe on the pit box Sunday, and why Team Penske chose to appeal Wolfe’s three-race suspension for rules violations at Phoenix.

The appeal has yet to be scheduled, and Wolfe did serve one of the three races already (at Fontana), but his presence certainly played a big factor in Keselowski’s win Sunday, as we discussed on Monday’s edition of NASCAR America.
