Martinsville Speedway debuted its LED lights Thursday night, transforming the half-mile track.
“Today is truly a historic day in the history of Martinsville Speedway,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell in a statement. “This is a venue which has a long and storied past, but with these lights now in place, we’re looking forward to a bigger and better future – and certainly a brighter one.”
The lights will be used when the Cup races, which begin in the afternoon, stretch into the evening. The track is running its Late Model race, the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 on Sept. 23 under the lights. That will be the track’s first night race in its 70-year history.
The Cup Series races at Martinsville on April 2 and Oct. 29.
