Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson are teammates, long-time friends and obviously competitors on the racetrack.
But they’re also competitors off-track, as well – in the battle of beards.
During Wednesday’s NASCAR Media Tour in Charlotte, Earnhardt had some lighthearted comments about his envy of the thicker beard that the defending and seven-time NASCAR Cup champion has been sporting of late.
When asked who has the better beard, Earnhardt said unequivocally, “Jimmie, I told him.
“He sent me a picture of him skiing and said he was getting ready to knock the beard off. I told him he better have it (for next month’s season-opening Daytona 500) because you get more drafting help.
“I said that’s a bad-ass beard and I’d keep if I were you, so he’s hung on to it. I’m certainly pro-beard.”
Earnhardt, who got married on New Years Eve, said wife Amy has been keeping an eye on her husband’s whiskers.
“If I knew he was going to come so strong, I’d have worked on mine a little more,” Earnhardt said. “Amy has me having it shorter these days. I certainly do envy what Jimmie has going on. It’s awesome.”
