Speedway Motorsports Inc., announced Tuesday that it has promoted Greg Walter to be executive vice president of Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Walter is a 17-year veteran of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., which owns Charlotte and seven other NASCAR tracks. Walter will be in charge of day-to-day operations of the 1.5-mile track, zMAX Dragway and The Dirt Track at Charlotte. He will report to SMI president and CEO Marcus Smith.

“At Speedway Motorsports, we take great pride in our people and strive to promote leadership from within,” Smith said in a press release. “During his time with the company, Greg has proven himself as a dedicated leader with a passion for excellence and a strong vision for our future. I am confident that he will embrace this new role with enthusiasm and look forward to all that he will bring to Charlotte Motor Speedway.”

Walter has been with SMI since 1999 when he joined Atlanta Motor Speedway as vice president of sales. In 2014, he was promoted to SMI’s national sales team, where he has been responsible with identifying and building partnerships at SMI’s eight tracks.

Before joining SMI, Walter spent five years at Capitol Broadcasting where he oversaw advertising sales for national NASCAR radio networks, as well as the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes Television Network and the Duke University Sports radio network.
