Carl Edwards is a NASCAR sponsor’s dream.
Not only does the Joe Gibbs Racing driver perfectly slide in sponsor references during interviews, but Edwards also supports their business away from the track. For the past few years, that has been evident in both commercials and mentions of his favorite food: Subway.
During Championship 4 Media Day in Miami Thursday, Edwards revealed that while he does have a complimentary Subway card that gives him free food (“It’s black. It’s awesome. It’s so great”), he had to talk his way into getting a sandwich recently.
“I was biking, halfway through my ride, my plan was to eat at Subway, and I didn’t have any money, and the people didn’t know who I was,” said Edwards, noting those behind the counter were reluctant to serve him.
“I was like, I just want the black forest egg and ham breakfast sandwich, that’s it, and a glass of -- I said, I swear I’ll pay next time I’m by here. They’re like, fine, okay. So they gave me a sandwich. So bicyclists eat free at Subway’s every once in a while.”
Joking that he was in a confessional, Edwards continued that while he has not been back to the Subway to repay them he did ask someone to do it for him.
Unfortunately, he continued, “I don’t know if they have.”
Edwards has been a Subway spokesman since 2008.
