Joe Gibbs faced a tough situation entering the Can-Am 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.
One of his four cars, driven by Carl Edwards, was already locked into the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, while the three others would battle for the final two spots. With two laps to go it appeared Matt Kenseth would take one of those spots as he led the field.
But when the caution flag came out and set up overtime, things changed quickly for the organization. Kyle Busch, restarting third, got into the back of Alex Bowman, who was lined up inside of Kenseth. Bowman then shot down into Turn 1 and got into Kenseth, sending the 2003 champion into the wall. Kenseth finished 21st and failed to advance.
Busch, however, finished second and did advance to defend his Sprint Cup title. But with Joey Logano winning the race, it also locked out Denny Hamlin, who finished seventh.
Afterward, Gibbs tried to express his thoughts to Marty Snider.
