AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Kyle Larson outran the remaining Chase for the Sprint Cup contenders Friday in the first Sprint Cup practice at Phoenix International Raceway.

Larson, who was eliminated from the playoffs after the opening round, turned a 139.524-mph lap on the 1-mile oval, besting top Chase driver Joey Logano (139.492). Rookie Chase Elliott was third at 139.297, and championship-eligible Denny Hamlin was fourth.

Martin Truex Jr. was fifth fastest but went to a backup car after his No. 78 Toyota hit the wall late in the practice.

How the rest of the Chase drivers stacked up in the first session for Sunday’s Can-Am 500, which will set the four-driver field for the Nov. 20 championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway:

--Jimmie Johnson (who already has advanced to the championship round), seventh;

--Kurt Busch, eighth;

--Matt Kenseth, 10th;

--Carl Edwards (who qualified to run for the title with Sunday’s win at Texas), 13th;

--Kevin Harvick 15th;

--Kyle Busch (19th).

Harvick, who missed the first 15 minutes of practice while serving a penalty, has won five of the past six races at Phoenix.
