Jamie McMurray to carry ‘Mac Tonight’ paint scheme at Darlington

When he races in Darlington Raceway’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 on Sept. 4, Jamie McMurray will join most other Sprint Cup drivers with a unique “throwback” paint scheme.

McMurray’s No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet SS will harken back to the McDonald’s Restaurants-themed “Mac Tonight” paint scheme driven in 1997 by NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bill Elliott.

According to a CGR media release, “Mac Tonight was a sunglasses-wearing, piano-playing crooner with a crescent moon for a head, who sang the popular jingle ‘Mac Tonight’. The midnight blue car, covered with stars and the Mac Tonight crescent moon will brighten the night at the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.”

This will mark the second consecutive year that Darlington Raceway has hosted the popular “Throwback Weekend.”

“I am excited that McDonald’s is bringing back the Mac Tonight paint scheme for this race,” McMurray said in the media release. “Last year was so much fun to see all the different throwback looks that teams had for the Southern 500 race.

“I think that Darlington has done a great job to get so many of the teams to participate and have a unique weekend to celebrate the history of NASCAR.”
