Kevin Harvick: ‘No way we can win a championship’ unless team is improved

Kevin Harvick was candid about some of the changes he wants to see coming out of a frustrating finish at New Hampshire.

LOUDON, N.H. – After another rough day for his pit crew Sunday, Kevin Harvick bluntly said Stewart-Haas Racing needed to improve his No. 4 team.

“It’s really going to have to come from the top,” Harvick told NBCSN’s Kelli Stavast. “They’re going to have to clamp down. There’s no way we can win a championship like this unless we straighten some of this stuff out.”

Harvick rallied for fourth at New Hampshire Motor Speedway after problems on two pit stops, one involving difficulty with removing lug nuts and another for an air gun problem. He lost 14 positions across the two stops.

His pit crew has been an Achilles’ heel in the past. SHR swapped pit crews with Tony Stewart’s team before the playoffs when Harvick won the championship in 2014.

He has one win and 15 top 10s this season and is ranked first in the standings, 14 points ahead of Brad Keselowski, but the most telling statistic might be that he has led the most laps this season without winning four times (Atlanta, Dover, Auto Club and Kentucky).

Since 2014, there have been 15 races in which he has led the most laps. He’s won four of those races.

“We’ve just got to perform better,” Harvick said. “We underexecute as a team on a weekly basis, and we’ve got to do a better job. Our Jimmy John’s Chevrolet cars are always fast, but we always do something wrong.”
