Doug Duchardt, the executive vice president and general manager for Hendrick Motorsports, is the guest on the latest NASCAR on NBC podcast, talking about the challenges of helping oversee a NASCAR powerhouse.

Duchardt joined Hendrick in February 2005, shortly after a plane crash killed several key members of the team. He helped restructure the organization’s competition department. Under his direction, Hendrick Motorsports chassis and engines have won eight Sprint Cup championships (six with Jimmie Johnson, one apiece with Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick).

Duchardt worked in the racing division of General Motors for a decade before joining Hendrick and previously had worked as an production engineer for GM, joining the company initially as a co-op student 33 years ago.

He discusses his automotive background, his managerial approach (which includes circulating quotes from legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden), his continuing education studies at MIT and his love of the St. Louis Cardinals.
