Kyle Busch uninjured in crash at Daytona

The rear tire on the No. 18 car blew out, causing a crash into the wall during practice for the Coke Zero 400.

Kyle Busch walked away after crashing nearly head-on into the Turn 2 wall with about 10 minutes left in Friday morning’s practice session at Daytona International Speedway.

Busch’s car, running near the bottom in a pack with his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, wiggled to the left and then turned right going up the banking into a heavy impact with the wall. He will go to a backup car that will start from the rear because it didn’t turn a practice lap.

“Your first instinct is to correct, and the car automatically corrects, finally when it catches or it hit the apron and caught, it just turned back the other way, head-on into the fence,’' Busch said after exiting the infield care center. “That was certainly a big hit. You’ve got to thank NASCAR for their safety advancements in the cars and the drivers’ equipment and things like that and, of course, the SAFER barrier. That could have been a heck of lot worse than it was.’'

In an interview with pit reporter Kelli Stavast after leaving the care center (video below), Busch, whose teammate Carl Edwards also had a cut tire in practice, was asked how concerning the tire issue was for him.

“Yeah, it doesn’t give you any confidence whatsoever in Goodyear’s ability to make a tire that’s worthwhile to go out there and race on,” he said. “So I guess we’ll just suffer through it and hope for the best.”

Goodyear reported that Busch had a cut tire.
