Smoke signal: Tony Stewart makes unannounced appearance at Atlanta

Tony Stewart Crash Auto Racing

In this Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 photograph, Tony Stewart stands in the garage area after a practice session for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Watkins Glen International, in Watkins Glen N.Y. Stewart struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr., 20, a sprint car driver who had climbed from his car and was on the track trying to confront Stewart during a race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in upstate New York on Saturday night. Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said his department’s investigation is not criminal and that Stewart was “fully cooperative” and appeared “very upset” over what had happened. Even though he’s recovering from a back injury and resulting surgery, you can’t keep Tony Stewart away from a racetrack, it seems.

Stewart, who injured his back while driving a sand rail in the Southern California desert late last month, made an unannounced appearance Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Stewart did not speak to the media, but as you can see from the following tweet and attached Fox Sports 1 video clip, he talked strategy and gameplans withTy Dillon, who will replace Stewart in the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet in Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at AMS.
