WHAT WENT RIGHT: From a performance standpoint, Smith had his best season ever in the Xfinity Series, with two wins (tied career single-season high), 11 top-five (career single-season high) and 26 top-10 (tied career single-season high) finishes. He also had a career single-season best in average start (8.7), and second-best in average finish (9.0). … Smith was in the hunt for the Xfinity Series championship all the way up to the final race, ultimately finishing fourth. … In his three-year stint with JR Motorsports, Smith finished 3rd (2013), 2nd (2014) and 4th (2015).

WHAT WENT WRONG: On the surface, nothing appeared to be wrong with Smith in 2015, other than coming up a bit short at the end of the season for the championship. Yet, somehow, his contract was not renewed by JR Motorsports, and he was replaced by Elliott Sadler and Justin Allgaier (who replaces Chase Elliott).

WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2016: This is a question waiting to be answered. At this writing, Smith remains a driver without a team. … No matter where he goes, he has the ability and talent to improve a team, be it in Sprint Cup, Xfinity Series or Camping World Truck Series. Plus, with Chris Buescher, Chase Elliott, Brian Scott and Ryan Blaney all jumping up to Sprint Cup in 2016, Smith would likely have been one of the favorites to potentially win the Xfinity title. All he needs is a home.
