Motorsport.com, citing multiple unnamed sources, reports that Brian Scott will drive the No. 9 Sprint Cup car for Richard Petty Motorsports in 2016.

Scott replaces Sam Hornish Jr.

An RPM spokesperson had no comment Wednesday morning. Richard Petty Motorsports stated that it would announce the driver of the No. 9 car at 11 a.m. ET Friday.

Richard Childress Racing - where Scott had raced the past three years in the Xfinity Series - confirmed to NASCAR Talk that Scott will not be back with the team in 2016.

RPM officials had made it clear that they needed sponsorship for the No. 9 car and that would play a role in who drove it. Scott’s family-owned Shore Lodge has served as a sponsor for him in the Xfinity Series. Shore Lodge served as Scott’s primary sponsor in 20 of the 33 Xfinity races this past season.

Scott placed eighth in the points this past season - his sixth season in the Xfinity Series. He finished a career-high fourth in points last year. Scott is winless in 208 career series starts. He has 77 top-10 finishes.

Scott has made 17 career Sprint Cup starts, including 10 this past season. He has yet to score a top-10 finish.
