Austin Dillon survives fireworks to complete sweep of Xfinity Charlotte races

After a stray firework almost hit Austin Dillon on pit road during pre-race, the only on-track fireworks took out Kyle Busch, leading to pole-sitter Dillon winning the Drive for the Cure 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

While Busch and Kasey Kahne wrecked on Lap 150, ending Busch’s night, Dillon was in the front on the way to leading 61 laps and winning his fourth Xfinity race of the year.

Dillon completed a sweep of the Xfinity Series’ races at Charlotte Motor Speedway, having won the first May event. Dillon had led the first few laps of the night before quickly falling back.

“We went back to fifth or sixth there, the second restart was good, got all the way up to third,” Dillon told NBCSN. “I knew our lap times were comparable to the leaders, we just needed to get the track position back.”

Dillon was able to get it back thanks to two debris cautions on Lap 50 and 143. Than came the restart on Lap 146, with Dillon in third, a similar spot he had been in at Charlotte in May.

“I ran wide open for about a lap or two to get the lead and then it was a good battle with Erik (Jones), it was pretty close,” Dillon said. “We were pretty loose that whole last run...but we were good enough to win the race.”
